Swine Flu spread reveals appalling state of our healthcare. H1N1, Dengue or Malaria, we cannot have quick fixes. We must overhaul delivery. All advanced economies regarded quality, accessible education & health as vital to growth & justice. Our failure in both is costly. Only robust education & healthcare will give poor a chance to be productive and to prosper, and promote harmony; not reckless freebies. We must and can build decent healthcare at low cost. Our obsession with power games must give way to serious systemic reform. We spend least on public health, spend it badly, & dont care for outcomes. Why is it a surprise that healthcare is in shambles? People have largely given up on government; yet private sector cannot solve public health problems. Robust, pragmatic PPP models work. Good news is demand side is strong: poorest Indians are spending a lot on education & health. We can overhaul delivery if we care enough. If we continue to fail in education & health, there will be enormous suffering & social strife; growth will be retarded & poverty will continue. Poverty, absence of skills, poor health, low productivity, low incomes, more poverty, social strife, low growth - vicious cycle must end!
