Swing A While With Freddie Keil – Freddie Keil and The Kavaliers – Digital Album now available Freddie Keil hailed from Samoa and moved to New Zealand as a boy. He grew up and joined the “Family” band The Keil Isles which his cousins had formed. This band had much success and popularity playing constant gigs. However in 1960, young Freddie decided to leave and go solo. He signed to Zodiac Records with his new band The Zodiacs, but before long they became known as Freddie Keil and The Kavaliers to avoid confusion with the label name. Personnel were Billy Belton on Rhythm Guitar, Little Dave Smith, piano, Dave Paul on sax, Brian Smith, bass guitar ( the electric bass being a very new instrument at this time ), Vic Williams on drums ( now a well known food and wine critic and writer ), Jimmy Murphy on lead guitar and Alphonso Keil on drums, and of course the dynamic and well organised Freddie on vocals. Freddie worked days as a drycleaner and directly imported his clothing from America. He always looked sharp and had plenty of admirers. He also chose clothing for the entire band, as well as the playlists, and there were no disagreements. The band worked hard through constant gigs which paid very well, and their reward was that they all chose to drive exclusive American cars - various Chevy Impalas, Pontiacs, Ford Customlines, Dodge Diplomats. Little Dave even had a brand new EJ Holden Premier. Zephyr Zodiacs and MkII Jaguars followed. These were true luxuries to be adored and envied amongst the small British offerings that most people got around in. Zodiac Records made 11 singles with the band between 1961 and 1965, and also this album from 1963 “Swing A While With Freddie Keil” now freshly remastered from original ¼ inch mono full track tape. Additionally the band backed many other Zodiac artists, as with their constant gigs and dedication, they were in excellent form, playing tight and always dependable. Featuring a packed list of foot tappers, this album will have you on your feet busting out your best 60s moves in no time, A couple of rockin instrumentals are included in the set helping to reveal why they were so in demand in dancehalls around Auckland, Taranaki and the Waikato at the time.
