Sword of king Sancho IV of Castile Sancho IV the Brave (12 May 1258 – 25 April 1295) was the King of Castile, León and Galicia from 1284 to his death. He was the second son of Alfonso X and Yolanda, daughter of James I of Aragon. Oakeshotts quote regarding the sword: The cross and pommel of latten bronze are decorated with elaborate mudejar ornament, incorporating Kufic characters which have so far defied elucidation, except that the word Allah occurs on the cross. The grip, of a dark red-brown wood, has on either side three circular panels, the arms of Castile quartered with Leon, painted in glass, flanked by small panels of similar technique, chequy or and sable. The blade, perfectly preserved in parts, is greatly corroded in others. An undecipherable inscription, in beautifully formed Lombardic characters, is etched upon the upper part of the fuller (…) scabbard is wood covered with rose-coloured leather with a U-shaped chape of silver. The belt, of green galoon with narrow borders of red silk decorated with a cable pattern, is secured by bands of black leather with a diagonal strip to prevent the bands from sliding apart.
