Sydney Schanberg’s examination by the Co-Accused’s Defense - TopicsExpress

Sydney Schanberg’s examination by the Co-Accused’s Defense Teams resumed this morning. The Witness acknowledged that he had no direct account on the execution of lower level Lon Nol officials. Excerpts from his diary showed the reactions of Sirik Matak and Ambassador Un Nim to US policy to withdraw support from Khmer Republic. Sirik Matak categorized US abandonment a “heartbreaking betrayal”, while Um Nim described how US had fooled Cambodia to enter the war only to leave the country to die. Counsel for Khieu Samphan Anta Guisse examined the Witness on the links between the United States bombing in Cambodia and the Vietnam War, the motivations of refugees fleeing to Phnom Penh, corruption under the Lon Nol regime, and looting by KR soldiers following 17 April 1975. Schanberg testified that while US was bombing Cambodia along the Ho Chi Minh trail during Sihanouk’s regime, after the rise of Lon Nol the bombing spread all over the country, targeting Khmer Rouge soldiers. The Witness concluded his testimony, acknowledging the importance of the tribunal and thanked the court for "proceeding in a very professional manner."
