Sydney is a six year old congregant at St. Lydias. Last night I asked her to draw some welcoming drawings on the sidewalk in front of the church. She wrote, Welcome to St. Lydias, drew the Lydian cross, and then, completely of her own accord, said, We need the juice and the soup! She drew a cup of grape juice, and a bowl of soup, and then said, Its on a table. She added the table, then narrated for me as she drew bread, a lit candle, and a pitcher of water. Then she added herself and her friend Elaine at the table. Hilariously, a few moments later, she said, we need that box thats an instrument! and added a shruti box and a drum under the table. Kids get symbol and ritual. They just do.
