Symphony by Mother Nature and History. The Great Dismal Swamp, located in the Costal Plain Region of southeast Virginia, is a diverse ecosystem that played a unique role in Underground Railroad. Runaways used the marshy swamp as a hiding stop on their way north, using the harsh conditions of the terrain to avert slave catchers. Those who remained, known as the Great Dismal Swamp Maroons, established a settlement of freemen and runaways, remaining there until after the Civil War. During the Civil War, the United States Colored Troops entered the swamp to liberate the people there, many of them joining the Union Army in the 54th & 55th vol. Regiments. The 54th regiment was comprised of free men across the country, including volunteers from Cincinnati.
