#Syria Protest to End Starvation In Syrian Cities - Chicago Saturday, February 1, 2014 3:00pm until 5:00pm in CST A series of military operations being conducted by the Syrian military in the city of Homs and refugee populated Yarmouk Camp are part of a widespread regime crackdown on Syrian civilians. #Homs is the third most populated city of Syria, located 100 km north of #Damascus. In 2011 and early 2012, the opposition sometimes called the city the Capital of the Revolution. For the past months Homs has been sieged by the Syrian regime, food and medications are forbidden to enter the city. #Yarmouk Camp is a 0.81 sq mi district of the city of Damascus, populated by Palestinians and Syrians, with hospitals and schools. Yarmouk is an unofficial refugee camp; it is home to the largest Palestinian refugee community in Syria. 11 months ago, the Syrian regime besieged the camp preventing access to food and medications for the people living inside. The International Red Cross (ICRC) & Syrian Arab Red Crescent are the aid organizations best equipped to intervene. They understand the dire need for immediate humanitarian intervention. Their efforts to deliver aid to civilians are being blocked by the Assad regime. ICRC President Peter Mauer during a recent trip to Syria described the situation as “catastrophic” and said, “[W]ith violence rising and needs growing, particularly in besieged areas, actions that translate into greater field access for the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent must now follow. As you are reading this sentence another child has died of hunger in Syria because relief organizations are not allowed to do their jobs. How you can help Please join this demonstration in front of the Red Cross Headquarters in Chicago. We want to gain media attention for the humanitarian crisis in besieged areas and support the intl community by demanding access for the Syria Red Cross to deliver food and medications to the displaced and the needy many of whom are only children.
