Maica Tereza The Church on a Desert Island Has Christianity and Church become what it is today simply by people reading and obeying the New Testament alone? Or have influences and inputs other than the NT shaped it? Just say there was a small tribe of simple folk living on a remote tropical island and someone gives them all a copy of the Bible and they all read it and they all believe that Jesus is the Son of God and are born again. Then, without any further input, without any contact from the outside world or any access to books of Church history, theology, doctrine or whatever, they are left to themselves for a hundred years. They’re just left alone with the Bible and no other influences, no books, no TV preachers, no internet. What kind of Christianity would you find there one hundred years later? For example, would you return to find they had all become Roman Catholic simply by reading the Bible alone, without knowing that any such thing exists? Would they have become Lutherans, Baptists or Pentecostals just by reading the Bible alone without having heard of these denominations? Would some become Mormons, some JWs or SDAs simply by reading the Bible and without having read their literature? None of this would happen. But what kind of Church would there be on the island after one hundred years of only reading the Bible? So you go and airlift one of those believers out and bring him to “civilization” and then ask him, How do you do Church on your island? The man looks puzzled at the question. He takes the Bible out of your hand and opens it to the NT and says, this is how we do Church, this is how we live. We don’t know anything else about the Christian life and the Christian Church than what is written here, so we just do exactly as it is written here in the NT. Let’s go and do likewise. Many subscribe to the “church evolution” theory, that the early Church was just a new-born infant Church, very primitive and rough, and then slowly over the centuries it matured and evolved into a full-grown sophisticated and mature Church. They look back at the first century believers rather condescendingly or patronizingly, saying, Hey, that’s all they knew at the time! Now we know so much more! This is not true. What happened is that under the Apostles, though the people were not perfect, it reflected the pattern from Heaven, the embodiment of God’s Son, expressing His nature and character. Then progressively there was a falling away. Then, in spurts there was reformation and a calling back to the truth. But restoration is not forward progress; it is to simply restore what has been lost. Revival is not progress; it is simply to bring backsliders back to where they should have been all along. The Reformation was not a great leap forward, it was simply a recovery of certain truths which had been abandoned, but then they mixed it up with the traditions of men so as to dilute the power of any genuine restoration happening. If you lose your wallet full of money and then two hours later find it you don’t shout, Wow, what a find! I’m rich! You’re just thankful you got back what you had lost. Similarly, there’s things we need to reclaim for the Church which have been lost. There is no new revelation, just recovering the lost one. We have to ask, have we got where we are now by obeying the Word of God? Has the influence of the New Testament been the main factor in bringing us to where we are now? Biserica formată pe o insulă necivilizată - de Ian Vincent A devenit oare Biserica ceea ce este astăzi pur şi simplu datorită faptului că enoriaşii citesc şi împlinesc numai ceea ce este scris în Noul Testament? Nu cumva este ea modelată de surse şi influenţe, cu totul altele decât Noul Testament? Să presupunem că ar fi existat un mic trib alcătuit din oameni simpli care trăiesc pe o insulă neafectată de civilizaţia modernă, şi cineva le dă pentru prima dată o Biblie pe care ei o citesc, sunt convinşi că Isus este Fiul lui Dumnezeu, şi sunt născuţi din nou. Apoi, fără nimic altceva, fără nici un alt contact cu lumea din afară, fără vreo carte despre istoria Bisericii, fără teologie, sau orice fel de doctrine, sunt lăsaţi de capul lor timp de o sută de ani. În toţi aceşti ani să nu aibă la dispoziţie decât Biblia, fără nici o altă influenţă, nici o altă carte, fără internet şi fără evanghelişti la televiziune. Ce fel de creştini credeţi că veţi găsi acolo peste 100 de ani? Credeţi, de exemplu, că peste o sută de ani îi veţi găsi pe toţi convertiţi la Catolicism prin simpla citire a bibliei, fără să ştie că o astfel de denominaţie există deja? Ar deveni ei oare Luterani, Baptişti sau Penticostali doar prin simpla citire a Bibliei, fără să fi auzit în prealabil despre aceste denominaţii? Ar fi oare posibil ca unii dintre ei să devină Mormoni, alţii Iehovişti sau Sâmbătari prin simpla citire a Bibliei, şi fără să fi citit nici una din cărţile lor? Cu siguranţă că nu s-ar întâmpla niciodată aşa ceva. Totuşi, ce fel de Biserică s-ar putea forma pe o astfel de insulă izolată timp de o sută de ani, timp în care singura sursă de informaţie a locuitorilor este Biblia? Să zicem că mergi acolo şi iei un credincios de pe insulă, îl aduci la civilizaţia continentală, şi îl întrebi: Pe ce bază funcţionează Biserica pe insula voastră? Insularul ar rămâne perplex în faţa unei astfel de întrebări. Ţi-ar lua Biblia din mână, ar deschide-o la Noul Testament şi ar spune: Iată baza pe care funcţionează Biserica, şi iată felul cum trăim noi. Noi nu ştim nimic altceva despre viaţa creştină şi despre Biserica Creştină decât ceea ce se află scris aici în Biblie. Aşa că noi facem întocmai ceea ce citim în Noul Testament. Ce minunat ar fi dacă am face şi noi la fel! Mulţi enoriaşi din zilele noastre devin adepţi ai “teoriei evoluţioniste” a Bisericii, potrivit căreia Biserica Primară ar fi fost doar o Bisericuţă nou-născută, care a trebuit să treacă prin faza copilăriei, că ea ar fi fost necivilizată şi necizelată, şi că mai târziu, încetul cu încetul, de-a lungul secolelor, ea a evoluat şi s-a maturizat devenind Biserica matură, modernă şi sofisticată din zilele noastre. Aceşti enoriaşi privesc la credincioşii primului secol cu un aer de superioritate, într-un mod înţelegător şi îngăduitor, spunând: Ce să-i faci, în vremea aceea atâta au ştiut săracii de ei. Astăzi, noi avem la dispoziţie o cunoştinţă cu mult mai mare ca a lor. Lucrul acesta este cât se poate de fals. Adevărul este că pe vremea Apostolilor, deşi credincioşii nu erau perfecţi, Biserica oglindea un model ceresc întruparea Fiului lui Dumnezeu, reflectând natura şi caracterul Lui. Mai târziu, încetul cu încetul a avut loc alunecarea şi îndepărtarea. Din când în când, în bisericile tradiţionale au avut chemări de întoarcere la adevăr şi câteva reforme religioase. Totuşi, prin definiţie, restaurarea sau reforma nu constituie progres, ci reprezintă doar redobândirea a ceea ce s-a pierdut. Trezirea nu înseamnă progres, ci înseamnă doar readucerea celor căzuţi înapoi la locul unde ar fi trebuit să stea neclintiţi. Marea Reformă religioasă a lui Luther nu a fost un mare salt înainte pentru Biserică, ci a constituit doar restabilirea anumitor adevăruri care au fost pierdute sau abandonate. Din nefericire, realizările Marii Reforme au fost amestecate cu tradiţiile omeneşti, diluând astfel efectul unei restaurări autentice. Dacă cineva îşi pierde portofelul cu bani, iar câteva ore mai târziu îl găseşte din nou, nu va striga cât îl ţine gura: Am găsit o grămadă de bani! De azi înainte sunt un om bogat! Chiar dacă îşi va împărtăşi bucuria cu cei din jur, el nu a făcut altceva decât să recupereze ceea ce a pierdut, dar care de fapt, deja îi aparţinea. În acelaşi fel, noi ca Biserică, trebuie să redobândim multe valori pierdute pe care ar fi trebuit să ne însoţească tot timpul. Aceasta nu constituie o nouă descoperire, ci doar o redescoperire a valorilor pierdute. Trebuie să ne întrebăm în modul cel mai serios: Am ajuns noi acolo unde ne aflăm în prezent prin ascultarea de Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu? A fost oare influenţa Noului Testament, factorul principal care ne-a făcut să ajungem în starea în care ne aflăm? Nu cumva ne aflăm într-un loc şi într-o stare în care ascultarea de Noul Testament nu ne-ar fi adus niciodată? Adevărul trist este că mulţi dintre noi sunt mai degrabă influenţaţi de orice alte lucruri decât de Cuvântul Viu al lui Dumnezeu. De aceea, nici trezirile autentice şi nici progresul spiritual nu au loc aşa cum Dumnezeu doreşte şi poate să le aducă în Biserica Sa din zilele noastre. Eşti tu dispus să mergi împotriva curentului?
