T&T battles past Bahamas in straight sets POINT-A-PITRE, Guadeloupe, July 25, 2013- Nicholas Prescott had a match-high 16 points as Trinidad & Tobago served off its campaign at the Ninth CAZOVA Junior U21 Men’s Championship with a tough 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) defeat of Bahamas in Pool B at the Paul Chonchon Sports and Cultural Centre. Playing the first of their two matches on the day, due to a change in schedule to accommodate the late arrivals of their players , Prescott and company used the extra day of training to great advantage to secure the first 3-0 win of the tournament. Prescott had 13 kills and three aces in his total while Newton Grant, the team’s captain and MaalikSpringle chipped in with eight points apiece. Gaeg Smith led Bahamas with seven points, while captainRajahlMoxey and Kenton Dawkins each added six points. Overall, it was a very close contest between both teams, however, T&T boosted by its powerful spiking and serving game, managed to pull off the win, by claiming the vital points when it mattered most. A key aspect to Trinidad & Tobago’s win was that it outdid its rivals on spikes, 28-19 and service aces 8-2. Prescott rallies T&T past Guadeloupe in five sets POINTE-A-PITRE, Guadeloupe, July 25, 2013 - Nicholas Prescott racked up 27 points as Trinidad & Tobago earned the second automatic spot to the semifinals of the Ninth CAZOVA Junior U21 Men’s Championship after a tense 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 15-12) win over host Guadeloupe at the Paul Chonchon Sports and Cultural Centre. Prescott had 23 points and two blocks in his tally on the night and he was supported by captain Newton Grant who had 14 points and MaalikSpringle, with ten in the see-saw affair which lasted two hours and 14 minutes. With both teams entering the match with 1-0 records after wins over Bahamas (0-2), the winner was certain to top the group and earned the lone automatic semifinal spot available and in the end, T&T proved more aggressive on the night, outscoring its rival 46-36 on spikes. For Guadeloupe, Malick Frederic had the hot hands with 20 points, including four on blocks and three on aces, while Damien Ebrig and YannisBiodore added 11 and 10 respectively. With the win T&T, which earlier in the day got the better of Bahamas in three closely fought sets, ended with a perfect 2-0 record in Pool B and top spot with eight points. Grant was quick to admit it was a very difficult match for his team as it was their second of the day as well as being as tough as the first. “The guys did well and now we have a chance to get some rest and prepare for whichever team we meet in the semifinals. We came here with the main objective to get to the medal round and so far we have managed to maintain that ambition and the guys must take full credit for their performances today.” Speaking after the loss, Guadeloupe captain Willy Corenthin said his team came up against a superior team in T&T on the day and he believes they have the potential to reach the final.
