TABLE MOUNTAIN Table Mountain, in Table Mountain National Park is one of Africa’s most famous mountains offering unrivalled views of Cape Town, the ocean and neighbouring peaks. Visitors can reach the summit on foot with experienced hikers and novice walkers both likely to be satisfied with trips ranging from one to three hours. With over 20million visitors since its inception in 1929, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is the quickest way to get up and down Table Mountain. The cableway takes five minutes to reach the summit at 1067m above sea level with the floor of the circular cabin rotating to give travellers 360° views. The more adventurous visitors can also choose to abseil back down the mountain. Once at the peak, guided tours and signposted walks are popular with visitors and there is also a wheelchair route. Photographers and birdwatchers are spoilt for choice with over 1,460 different species of plants and several indigenous bird species. Other visitors to the mountain include the Cape Hyrax (dassies), porcupines, mongooses, girdled lizards, agamas, snakes and butterflies.
