TAFFY TAKES STEPS Taffy is a seven year old Welsh Corgi who lives with Katie, another Welsh Corgi. They love to play together (the way Corgi do, sitting up and growling!) and go for walks together. One day, Taffy suddenly became much quieter, yelping in pain, and he was uncharacteristically unwilling to play or go for walks with his friend. Taffy’s vet decided to refer him to one of Willows neurology-neurosurgery specialists for further examination, as he suspected a problem with his back. At Willows, Sebastien Behr examined Taffy and it became apparent that he had signs of weakness and inco-ordination in his back legs and his spine was uncomfortable. The decision was taken to perform an MRI scan of the spine the same day, to try to identify more precisely the nature and severity of Taffy’s back injury. As soon as the scan was finished, Sebastien showed Taffy’s owners the images and discussed the results with them. The scan had shown that Taffy had a ‘slipped disc’ (acute disc herniation, to be precise!) in his back, causing significant pressure on the nerves of the spinal cord and resulting early signs of paralysis. Although Taffy could still walk, the spinal cord was undergoing a severe degree of compression (click on link below to see the MRI pictures). Spinal surgery was recommended to remove the slipped disc material and relieve the pressure on the nerves. Taffy’s owners were keen to give him the best chance of recovering from this injury and gave the go-ahead. Following the operation, Taffy recovered well and showed such good progress that he was able to go home the day after surgery. His very caring owners were delighted to get him back and took great care of him during his recovery, ensuring that he would not try to do too much, too soon. At his one month check-up, Taffy was found to be going from strength to strength, and instructions were given to gradually increase his exercise. Five months on, and Taffy is now doing all the things he used to do before the surgery, back with his friend Katie (as you can see in the picture), enjoying his woodland walks and even some runs in the field! willows.uk.net/news/m/news/view/395
