Berman Award for Excellence in Teaching General Semantics The Institute of General Semantics is pleased to announce a new annual teaching award in general semantics: The Sanford I. Berman Award for Excellence in Teaching General Semantics. The award bears a cash sum of $1,000, and recipients will be officially recognized at the annual Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture (AKML). To be eligible for the Berman Award, instructors need not teach an entire course in general semantics but they must show evidence of using GS formulations in educational settings. Supporting pedagogical material may include: course syllabi, sample readings lists, workshop outlines and overviews, samples of instructional activities and/or in-class exercises, publications, etc. Teachers and professors at all levels (elementary and middle school, high school, junior college, university, continuing education) should send a brief letter of nomination outlining how students learn general semantics principles from the nominated instructor. Instructors also need to submit a short sample video clip (at least five minutes long) that shows the nominated teacher in action. The video may be either a private submission or a link to a public talk. All materials (letter of nomination, supporting pedagogical materials, and the video) for this year’s Berman Award should be sent by September 30, 2014, to [email protected]. Hardcopy material may be sent to: Berman Award c/o Institute of General Semantics 72-11 Austin Street #233 Forest Hills, NY 11375
