TAIWAN LOOKING FOREIGN STUDENTS THERE WERE 64558 FOREIGN STUDENTS IN 2012 OF WHOM 6896 WERE MALAYSIAN CHINESE STUDENTS AND TARGET IS TO HIT 100,000 STUDENTS BY 2016 Publication Date:08/02/2013 ROC government efforts to establish a more friendly education environment and promote Taiwan as a destination for higher education have delivered fruitful results, Premier Jiang Yi-huah said Aug. 1. “Southeast Asia is our target market for attracting overseas students and the government is making every effort to strengthen education exchanges and academic cooperation with countries in the region,” Jiang said. “We are also offering a wide variety of incentive programs to attract overseas students en route to establishing Taiwan as the hub for higher education in East Asia.” Jiang, who made the remarks during a regular Cabinet meeting on the progress and prospects of exporting Taiwan’s higher education, said the Ministry of Education is joined by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Science Council and Overseas Community Affairs Council in achieving this goal. Initiated by former MOE Minister Wu Chin-ji in 2010, the Taiwan education promotion project has chalked up considerable headway, the premier said, citing the country’s strong showing at a recently concluded education fair in Malaysia. Overseen by MOE Minister Chiang Wei-ling, the event helped successfully highlight Taiwan’s quality tertiary education system, Jiang added. “Another important challenge stemming from demographic change and global economic competition is devising ways of nurturing talent and keeping it in Taiwan. We are scheduled to convene a Cabinet meeting on the matter and will seek a breakthrough.” Separately, Chiang said the MOE is looking to attract more students from Malaysia given its large Chinese population and the fact that the two countries have a mutual diploma recognition program. In 2012, there were 64,558 overseas students in Taiwan, 6,896 of whom were Malaysian-Chinese students, the minister said, adding that Malaysia is Taiwan’s largest source of overseas Chinese students. Chiang said he hopes the number of all overseas students in Taiwan to hit 100,000 by 2016. (RC-JSM)
