TAKE ACTION: STAND WITH THE MDF – SIGN THE PETITION The MDF, the Movement for the defence of the slum residents, a Spiritan Work in the city of São Paulo, Brazil and its partner, Caritas Australia together with a number of organizations have signed a petition about the preparations for the World Cup and Olympic Games in Brazil. The organizations leading the protest: The Popular Committee of the World Cup and The World Cup for whom? have calculated that 250,000 (a quarter of a million) poor Brazilians, living in favelas, slums and shanty towns, have been evicted from their homes to make way for the soccer stadiums and the transport corridors giving access to these locations. Many of these residents have received no compensation, or as little as US$5,000 when the cost of the cheapest alternative housing is at least 10 times that amount. These 250,000 people have been removed, so that FIFA can come to Brazil for a 6 week period in June/July and leave with a net profit of US$ 5 billion dollars. It is estimated that for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro a further 50,000 of Brazils poorest will be removed from their homes to make way for the 7 locations + golf course that will be built for the Games in Rio in 2016. These 300,000 Brazilians are a part of the poorest 10% of the population that have only 1% of the wealth of the nation whereas the richest 10% have 43% of the GNP. The other big winners in the organization of the World Cup will be the big businesses that sponsor the event, Itau Bank, Coca-Cola, Adidas, McDonalds, Emirates, etc Caritas Australia has organized a petition called Make your sporting events just for all and it is addressed to FIFA and the IOC (International Olympic Commission). If you disagree with these evictions, please sign the petition at the site under this paragraph. The petition is the 8th item from the top on the left hand side of the homepage, at this site. caritas.org.au/projectcompassion Please feel free pass on this petition to your groups and associations. At a later date Caritas is going to petition the various levels of government in Brazil: Federal, State and Municipal that have committed these acts of injustice against their own people. Thanking you for your attention, Vincent Deely, Lay Spiritan associate and member of the MDF team, São Paulo, Brazil
