TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH: Daily renewal for busy Catholics Saturday, September 14 FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS When cross purposes are at work While Christians today see in the cross a sign of victory, before Constantine’s Edict of Milan calling for religious toleration in the Roman Empire in 313, the cross was a dreaded symbol representing Rome’s cruel persecution of Christians and others who challenged the emperor’s authority. While such persecution may seem remote to us, it is alive and well in a number of regimes hostile to Christianity around the world. Pray today for all Christians who are not able to exalt the cross without fear of persecution. Bring their pain, and the pain of all those who have died for the sake of their faith, to the foot of the cross in prayer. TODAY’S READINGS: Numbers 21:4b-9; Philippians 2:6-11; John 3:13-17 (638) “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.” CONTRIBUTORS Clarissa Aljentera, Alice Camille, Daniel Grippo, Father Larry Janowski, O.F.M., Evelyn Mautner, Siobhán O’Neill, Joel Schorn, Patrice J.
