TAKE THE “A” TRAIN TO GOOD HEALTH… By: Kathryn Abugel It was so nice for Maria T. and all of you to share your beautiful Century Village with me for an entire week! Loved it, loved it, loved it! You put me to shame on the dance floor with Pete Terri at the keyboard in the party room. BBQ Lou rocked me off the dance floor, Bobbie socks and all! This week here in the village has inspired me to write this article. I was so impressed at how fit and health conscious most people living here are. Dancing, walking early morning and early evening waling, and swimming are all excellent ways to keep fit, stay fit and ward of colds and flu, just by keeping the number one defense system in our bodies, our lymphatic system, flowing. Did you know that deep breaths, exercise, or just wiggling your feet could help you get your immune system to work more efficiently? Noodles are such a great invention! Many of you accomplish all this just noodling around the pool, moving your arms and legs with little or no effort at all. Did you ever think your graceful strokes could actually help your body fight off colds? Because the human body is made so specifically, it pretty much knows how to maintain balance and keep organs and joints working on their own, even if our brains would love to just sit, sun and snooze. We have an intricate lymphatic system, which is comprised of nodes and vessels that move waste, water and proteins to help our body stay healthy. If you can imagine a subway system with tracks and stations moving us to different destinations, you will be able to get a better idea of how the lymphatic system works. Nodes gather particles of waste, water and proteins; the vessels are like the trains that move the particles through the system to their proper destination for elimination, absorption and lubrication, for example the bladder, digestive system and colon. Moving our bodies keeps those trains running. Gentle movements will keep the internal system healthy and efficient with little or no effort. When there is a track problem, everything gets backed up. Lymphatic massage is a gentle rhythmic and focused massage that keeps the system in top shape. It also feels marvelous. Mostly everyone can have a lymph massage. It’s relaxing and great for folks that have sensitive skin. Some indications of lymph systems being sluggish or not at their capacity, would be swollen limbs, ankles or feet, hands, arms, frequent colds that don’t seem to go away or just getting sick much too often. I’ve even given a lymph massage to a gal that had a tooth extracted. She had really swollen cheeks but the massage helped her back to her beautiful self. If you choose to have a lymph drainage massage know that it administered with a loving light touch. Lymphatic massage reduces swelling and is a gentle touch to sensitive and fragile skin, and most of all, really relaxing for both the therapist and client. Thank goodness that so many people at Century Village dance, swim, walk and use their noodles, (no pun intended), to help keep their systems of tracks (vessels) and stations (nodes) moving with ease. So take the “A” train to better health, dance, swim and walk. Or, take the “M” train for massage and enjoy the truly wonderful benefits of a relaxing hour to optimum health.
