TAKEN THE MICKEY TAKEN 3 (M) 109mins; IN CINEMAS NOW Director Olivier Megaton returns to the TAKEN series in a film that ultimately feels a lot like TAKEN 2: completely unnecessary, de-clawed and longwinded. Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) is framed for a crime he did not commit and is doggedly pursued by savvy-cop Franck Dotzler (Forest Whitaker). If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ll know what’s metaphorically taken from Mills this time, as the film attempts to tonally shift into action-drama territory, instead of the action-revenge approach that made the original film so entertaining. It feels a lot longer than it is because of the light-on dramatic approach, while the action sequences feel neutered compared with the brutality of the original film. It has one or two decent action set pieces, but a lot of the attempts at conveying frantic fights are done so via up-close shaky cam with way too many cuts, which makes it easy to lose track of what’s going on and is infinitely more frustrating than effective. If you loved TAKEN 2, you may enjoy this; but if you didn’t, TAKEN 3 is best avoided. Review by Nathan Lawrence Will you be takin’ a chance on Taken 3?
