TALK TO ME “Talk to me, Talk to me, Oo I love the things you say, Talk to me, Talk to me, In your own sweet gentle way.”(Little Willie John) If your “on line” relationship with someone relies on words only, research shows the person receiving your message may understand only 7% to 35% of your messages. Studies indicate nonverbal communication or body language constitutes 65% to 93% of your messages when communicating. There could be a “disconnect” in “on line” relationships that will haunt the next generation. Do you think an “on line” relationship might struggle with a few disadvantages? Chances are it will be riddled with communication breakdowns, as well as disappointments in expectations of each other. Without knowing the tone of voice the person intended, the facial expressions, gestures, or in gauging the other person’s response, words alone can generate tension, mistrust, and confusion. Eye contact alone is often referred to as “Windows to the soul.” The eyes can reveal so much about what a person is thinking or feeling. During a face to face conversation the natural unconscious language of the body will broadcast true feelings and intentions at any given moment which tends to build trust and support words being expressed. Even though we have a new tool created in 2004 called “Facebook,” the face to face conversation for real connections are being defaced. That powerful tool of connecting with others which is the ability to understand and use nonverbal communication or body language may become a lost cause in the following generations who develop from “on line” relationships.
