TALK at LSE: Professor Max Cameron (University of British Columbia) (From Dr Francisco Panizza) Dear colleagues, On behalf of the Latin America and International Affairs Programme (LAIAP) of LSE IDEAS, I am pleased to invite you to a conversation with Professor Maxwell A. Cameron who has just completed an interesting new book on the constitutionalism and the separation of powers, entitled Strong Constitutions: The Social-Cognitive Origins of the Separation of Powers. Here is a brief precis of the argument: “Constitutional states use texts to coordinate collective action, and they do so by creating governmental agencies with specific jurisdiction and competence over distinct types of power. The division of government into three branches enables state officials and citizens to use written texts—legal codes and documents, including constitutions—along with unwritten rules and conventions to coordinate their activities on larger scales and over longer time horizons. Cameron argues that constitutional states are not weaker because their powers are separated. They are generally stronger because they solve collective action problems rooted in speech and communication.” Professor Cameron will be at LSE on July 3, and we are pleased to host him for a colloquium. The event will take place at COL. 2.01 (Colombia House) from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm. Prof. Cameron will present the main argument of his book and discuss its relevance for comparative politics, especially in the Latin American region, after which Francisco Panizza will offer a response. We will then open the discussion for a Q&A. We see this event as an opportunity build closer connections between LSE and the University of British Columbia’s Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions around issues of governance and democratic reform. Strong Constitutions is scheduled to appear in June of this year, and Cameron plans to bring copies for sale at a discount or for examination for class use. If you would like a pre-publication version of the manuscript that can also be arranged. You may contact Prof. Cameron directly at: [email protected] Please RSVP with Ursula Durand, LAIAP Programme Coordinator, at [email protected]
