This according to the Minister of Transport, Mrs. Dzifa Aku Attivor, shows that the Mahama-led government is poised to fulfilling the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2012 manifesto. “For a big project like the conversion of the Tamale Airport to an international standard, it is important for the President to come and cut the sod to manifest the pledge he made to the good people of Ghana when he launched the manifesto in October 2012,” she stated. The first phase of the project that comprises the extension of the runway from the current 2,480 meters to 3,940 meters, include the installation of a complete lighting system to accommodate bigger aircraft and it is expected to be completed in September 2015. “The Tamale airport project is divided into two phases. The first phase is to reconstruct and expand the runway because currently the length we have cannot facilitate flight. So there will be a new construction which will extend the runway,” she said. Mrs. Dzifa Attivor also noted that the construction of the airport will provide about 500 jobs for the people of the Northern Region. “From the briefing I had with the project directors, they will be requiring about 500 workers and only 5 percent will be expatriates. So it will create a lot of jobs for our people especially within Tamale and its environs,” she assured. When completed, the Tamale International Airport would serve Muslim Pilgrims in the North and neighbouring countries on their annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The 100-million dollar upgrading and expansion project was signed between the management of the Ghana Airport Company Limited and the Brazilian construction company and subsequently approved by Parliament in September 2013.
