TANZANIA HAS TOLD UNESCO IT HAS ABANDONED HIGHWAY - TopicsExpress

TANZANIA HAS TOLD UNESCO IT HAS ABANDONED HIGHWAY IDEA According to UNESCO - the Tanzanian government has stated that the plan for a road crossing north Serengeti is has been abandoned. UNESCO is urging the Tanzania government to go ahead with planning the Southern alternative route. This information was released in June, just when The Tanzanian government asked Germany to do the factibility study and EACJ ruled against the paved highway. (#5 under Decisions) We are extremely pleased that WHC is monitoring the highway issue very closely. They also express concern about the Mara basin water. This is something we plan to expand to be covering in the next coming months. So - of course - the question begs to be answered - why is the Tanzanian government appealing the EACJ court decision if they told UNESCO they are abandoning the idea? Experts believe it is just posturing - a common practice - to appeal these types of rulings, perhaps in the hopes that the other party (in this case ANAW) can not pay to fight the appeal. Which makes it all the more important that we raise money for our legal defense fund again. YOU our fans - with your contributions - helped us to finance the majority of ANAWs legal fees last time.
