Limited, an Austaralian company on 1st November 2013 in the morning 5 AM, when workers in the dharna were all practically asleep. Police force pounced on the ~ workers, brutally lathicharged and charged teargas injuring several workers forcing a sizable numb hospitalization under serious condition. Around 200 workers were arrested and the General Secretary J&K Construction of Four Lane Road and Tunnel Workers Union affiliated to CITU, Shri Arsad President of the union was arrested from his residence. Let me kindly draw your attention that the workers are not doing any unlawful activities there warranting brutal police action. Rather the contractor company Leighton Private Ltd indulged in illegality denyin statutory benefits and rights to the workers and unlawful termination of service of a number of workers Union served suffiCiently advance notice as per law of the land along with their charter of demar withdrawal of victimization and implementation of statutes on 1st October 2013 and went on strike after 27 from 2ih October 2013 owing to non-response of the management within that period. They always respc to whenever the local labour department summoned them for conciliation. Should they deserve such I brutality? Rather, I may be allowed to state, the management of the contractor company are at serious fault by -\ violation of laws of the land in the matter of wages and social security and safety and also by their victin action through rampant dismissal of workmen in the span of last few years. The State Administration s have acted on them as at every step, the union kept the labour department and also the local administ including Divisional Commissioner, Jammu appraised of all happenings on the workers.
