TARABA UPDATE: THE 53RD INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY FROM MY BOSS ACTING GOVERNOR OF TARABA STATE: FROM OFFICE OF S.A ON FB MATTERS. MESSAGE FROM HIS EXCELLENCY, THE ACTING GOVERNOR OF TARABA STATE, ALHAJI GARBA UMAR ON THE OCCASION OF THE 53RD INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY: My dear compatriots, On behalf of our Executive Governor, His Excellency, Danbaba Danfulani Suntai (CON) and the good people of Taraba State, I join you in expressing unqualified gratitude to the Almighty God for preserving our lives and our country in this 53 years journey of nationhood. In the same spirit, I congratulate and wish our president and commander in chief, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo, President of the Senate, David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alooma Muktar and all Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora a Happy Independence Anniversary. We have no doubt made appreciable progress as a nation and in spite of our challenges, are more than ever before, looking to the future with renewed hope and vigor. For us in Taraba state, we will continue to take pride in this great Federation and contribute our quota to national development. Taraba state as “Nature’s Gift to the Nation” is appropriately positioned to help in moving the country forward with the following potentials:- Ø A population of 3.5 million people living in a land area of over 60,000 square kilometers. Ø Endowed with 4 million hectares of arable land of which only about 1.5 million hectares is under crop cultivation annually. Crops cultivated and thrive very well include maize, millet, sorghum, rice, wheat, sesame, groundnuts, yam, cassava, sweet and Irish potatoes, tea coffee, cocoa, oil palm and cola nuts among others. Ø Lately, we have been receiving requests from large scale investors whose documents are being processed for large scale, mechanized farming in the state. The process for allocation of 45 thousand hectares of fertile land is being made for Dangote sugar, while an American firm, Dominion farms is getting 30 thousand hectares for rice cultivation. Ø We are leading in the production of livestock with about 18 million animals currently being reared. Ø The largest stretch of the Benue River lies in Taraba state which is also endowed with many rivers, Donga, kashimbilla, Taraba, Benue and numerous streams. The rivers and streams also combine to make Taraba state a leading fish destination in the country. Ø The Nwonyo ox-bow lake, in ibi, spans 9 kilometers and is regarded as the longest of its kind in Africa. It is here the biggest fish in our country are being caught during the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival which holds annually. Ø It is blessed with the famous Mambilla Plateau, a non volcanic Plateau which stands at an altitude of over 2000 meters above sea level. It is an undulating scenic beauty with temperate climate and raining season of about 8 months. Ø The Barup water fall on the Mambilla plateau is capable of generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity at maximum utilization, but the federal Government is working towards harnessing only about 4000 for now. Ø The Gashaka-Gumpti National park has a land mass of 6402 square kilometers, is the largest and most diversified wild life enclave in the west African sub-region. It is also home to the highest point in the country known as Gangiwal, standing at over 2400 meters above sea level. Ø The geography and geology of Taraba state makes it easy to comprehend its abundant deposits. There are over 50 minerals occurrences in the state ranging from non-metallic, metallic, gem stones, radioactive, precious metals to hydrocarbon and gas. Ø We have all of these and more. To ensure maximum exploitation of these resources, the present administration in the state has in the past six years been focused in the provision of vital infrastructure and social services like roads, health care facilities, water supply, electricity, schools among others. We have made tremendous progress in this regard and invite more development partners and investors to join hands with us to actualize this vision. Once again congratulations on the occasion of our Nation’s 53rd Independence Anniversary and may God continue to bless Nigeria. ALH. GARBA UMAR Acting Governor of TARABA STATE.
