TARAS TOP 10 JOBSEARCH TIPS FOR SCHOOL LEAVERS 1. DO NOT WAIT until next year to start looking for a job. Put your resume in for jobs and if you have a week off for schoolies, you can always discuss that at interview. If you wait until after schoolies, or worse, January….you could DOUBLE the length of time you are looking, and only get access to the jobs that are left 2. DO have your voice mail activated & have a professional voice mail message – not a funny, rude or worse, no message. A simple “Hi, this is Felicity, I can’t get to the phone right now, but please leave a message and I’ll call you back” is perfect 3. DO NOT rely on a relative or friend to complete your resume – you must take ownership from the beginning & try to have a professional at least critique it, if not write it completely 4. Close down & make private ALL social media that may have images or text of you or your friends that you wouldn’t want an employer to see – they may google you, facebook, twitter, instagram and whatever else to find out a little more about you – don’t get caught out with party shots, racist or otherwise derogatory comments etc 5. If you see a job – apply for it ASAP – do not wait. Jobs go very quickly – don’t miss out because you waited 6. If you have at least ¾ of what they are asking for in the advertisement – APPLY FOR IT! They may not get someone with everything they hope for – you’ve got to be in it to win it 7. DO GET an interview outfit and have it hanging in the wardrobe ready – at all times 8. ALWAYS write a cover letter for each job you apply for – have one professionally prepared and then just tweak it for each job 9. Do NOT lack confidence just because you have limited experience or skills – employers hire more for attitude and personality, so be positive, enthusiastic, smile and get along with others & you’ll go a long way 10.
