TARAWIH Tarawih’ is derived from the root word ‘rauh’ or ‘raha’ which basically means to take a rest. Because it is customary to take a small break or rest halfway through these extra voluntary prayers of the nights of Ramadan, it came to be called and recognized as the ‘tarawih’ prayers so as to distinguish them from other voluntary night prayers. Now , the point of argument is whether to offer 8 rakah or 20.. its one of the disputes in the muslim ummah whether to offer 8 or 20 rakats .. IT is mentioned in the sahis bukhari vol 1 ,book of salah,hadith no 472 that, prophet mohammad saw said a person should offer qiym ul layl (night prayer) in 2 rakats,followed by 2 rakats ,followed by 2 rakats ,followed by 2 rakats ......and so on .AND if he fears that the dawn is approaching,he shouls offer 1 rakat so the rakat becomes witr ,becomes odd..SO AS FAR AS NO OF RAKATS IS CONCERNED ,WE CAN PRAY AS MANY AS POSSIBLE BUT IN RAKATS OF 2 ,THEN FOLLOW IT UP WITH 1 RAKAT ! But ,as far the practice of prophet mohammad saw is concerned ,it is mentioned in sahih al bukhari ,vol 2,book of tahhajud ,hadith no 1147 ,that hasrat aisha ( may ALLAH be pleased with her) she says that prophet saw while offering qiym ul lyl in ramadhan ,used to always offer 11 rakats ,not more thn 11 rakats . there are also many other hadiths ,whether in sahih bukhari or sahis muslim,which clearly mentions that prophet used to offer 8 rakats of 11( including witr) Also in the above same hadiths ,hasrat aisha ( may allah be pleased with her) says that prophet used to offer 4 rakats and i cannot explain the beauty and lenght of the rakats ,then he again used to offer 4 rakats and icannot explain the beauty and lenght of those 4 rakats ,then he used to offer 3 rakats... SO WE HAVE, 4+4+3 =11 BUT IF READ THE PRACTICE OF SALAFE SAALEHEEN (PREDECESSORS) ,WE FIND FROM RECORDS THAT SOME PRAY 11 RAKATS, SOME PRAY 13 , SOME 19 ,SOME 23 OR EVEN SOME PRAY 36 OR 39 RAKATS .AND IF WE READ MUSANNAF IBN ABI SHAIBAH,VOL 2 ,PAGE NO 165 -166,IT SAYS THAT THE TABAYEEN WHEN THEY USED TO OFFER TARAWIH ,THEY USED TO OFFER 20 RAKATS AND SOME PLACE IT SAYS THEY PRAYED 36 RAKATS ... SO AS FAR THE RAKATS ARE CONCERNED ,THE PROPHETS CALL ABOUT OFFERING AS MANY 2 RAKATS THEN FINISH IT UP WITH ONE RAKAT . BUT IF WE WANT TO FOLLOW THE SUNNAH OF THE PROPHET ,THEN WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT PROPHET SAW ALWAYS PRAYED 8 RAKATS ..BUT THAT DOESNNT MEAN OFFERING MORE THAN 8 IS WRONG .WE CAN OFFER AS MANY WE WANT ,BUT PROPHET MOHAMMAD SAW ALWAYS PRAYED ( 8+3=11) NOTE : IF A PERSON IS OFFERING HIS TARAWIH IN MOSQUE WHICH PRAYS IN CONGREGATION 8 RAKATS ,THEN HE SHOULD NOT GET UP AND PRAY ADDITIONAL 12 ,AND IF A MASJID PRAYS IN CONGREGATION 20 RAKATS ,THEN THE PRAY SHOULD NOT PRAY 8 RAKAT AND WALK OUT BECAUSE THE PROPHET MOHAMMAD SAW SAID THAT THE PERSON WHO ALONG WITH THE IMAM AND ENDS WITH THE IMAM,IT IS AS THOUGH HE HAS OFFERED THE SALAH FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT P.S ;MAY ALLAH GIVE US THE STRENGHT TO FOLLOW SUNAH AND TO ENDEAVOUR ISLAM IN OUR LIFES .MAY ALLAH MAKE US CAPABLE OF FASTING WHOLE MONTH AND OFFERING TARAWIH....MAY ALLAH BLESS US :) #AMEEEN
