TARGET SET FOR TOURISM TO ACCOUNT FOR 15% OF GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT Roseau, Dominica – Wednesday, December 17, 2014 – The Dominica Labour Party Government has reiterated its commitment to developing the Tourism sector as one of the drivers of national economic activity and diversification. The DLP’s 2014 general elections manifesto has outlined several initiatives to be implemented by government and has described Tourism as a high priority sector, based on the country’s natural and cultural resources upon which to develop a sustainable industry. Prime Minister of Dominica the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit has stated that Tourism has been identified as a growth industry and has set a target for Tourism to account for fifteen percent (15%) of the country’s gross domestic product. “In order to achieve this goal we have drawn up and started the implementation the Tourism Master Plan of 2013. At the centre of the plan is the commitment to diversify our tourism product. Hence, eco-tourism has been, and will continue to be, supported by educational tourism, cultural tourism, heritage tourism and sports tourism. The environment for investing in Tourism will be improved. Dominica will become more visitor-friendly with the Roseau Renewal and the Portsmouth Enhancement Projects. Once again, the Dominica State College will establish a new faculty to provide students with the necessary skills to boost the Hospitality sector,” Prime Minister Skerrit stated. Senator the Honourable Robert Tonge has been given the portfolio of Tourism and Urban Renewal in the new DLP Administration. Several projects including hotel developments in Portsmouth and on the site of the old Public Works Garage, the construction of an international airport and the Roseau Renewal and Portsmouth Enhancement Projects are part of government’s plans to improve the Tourism product.
