TBT: Any of you 40+ food talkers remember Sambos, located on Washington Ave in Racine? It was at the spot where the Hallman Lindsey paint store is now and it was a 24-hour Dennys-like restaurant. As far as I can see it was only in Racine in the 1970s, maybe into early 1980s. At one time Sambos was a chain with over 1000 restaurants nationwide. BTW does anyone know what happened to location directly after Sambos went out of business? In 1981, Sambos filed for bankruptcy with one of the problems being the name, as it was associated with a racism. The thing was that allegedly the name came about because one of the original owners was named Sam and the other owners last name was Bohnett---put them together SamBos However, in the early years the owners certainly did market the restaurant with a jungle theme along, embracing the similarity of the name to the racist image/term of a sambo. Believe it or not, there is still one Sambos left, the original location in Santa Barbara, California, pictured.
