TBT: Ashley went spelunking in the Camry a few days ago in an effort to pretty it up before ditching it for her new ride. Somewhere beneath piles of shoes, Dunkin’ Donuts bags, and Peter Murphy CD’s, was my production folder from Ordinary Story. It’s stuffed full of storyboards, the shooting script (draft 6), insurance certificates, talent contracts, script breakdowns, prop lists, set drawings, camera reports, transfer logs, scene notes, and my original hand-written long-form screenplay. The raw and ugly sinew that holds a production together. This isn’t even the entirety of the paperwork involved (the budget and accounting is in another folder), this is just what my 1st AD and I lugged around set. As lugubrious as this is, it’s still a small sampling of the paperwork involved in my little seventeen minute film. In a way it’s an pedantic example of the difference between professional and amateur productions, there was about six months of pre-production before we ever rolled camera. A necessary step in the transition from idea to physical reality. All of that time and effort was spent to forge a short film in a scant four days, a tale told without the comfort of dialogue, names, introductions, or apologies, presented in the comforting color palette of piss and rust. I dont know how long that folder had been quietly sulking in the depths of that car, but I am quite glad to return it to its proper home.
