TBT...For Seniors who were teenagers in the 50s: Anybody remember TAYLOR HALL, a teen dance hall in Pasadena, TX? Well, if you do, heres the story with pictures/videos: In 1953 Katherine Sanders and few other mothers rented a hall behind St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on 1050 E. Thomas and started the TAYLOR HALL TEEN CANTEEN. Dances were held on Friday and Saturday nights. Shortly afterwards the dances were moved to the Community Center in Memorial Park on Vince St (where the old Pasadena Historical Museum use to be). As its popularity grew Friday and Saturday nights were set aside for high school students and Thursday nights were reserved for Junior High students. In 1956 the Canteen was moved to 112 S. Randall (behind the ice house) where Mrs. J. L. Sanders continued to be the chaperone and Officer “Papa Dean” watched out for us kids. By now I was a regular, dancing to Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel,” Carl Perkin’s “Blue Suede Shoes” (which Elvis also recorded), the Platter’s “Magic Touch,” and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers’ “Why Do Fools Fall in Love.” Dick Clark’s American Bandstand made its first appearance that year. I had a couple good years there but roller skating competitively for Hubert’s Roller Rink began to eat up my spare time. TAYLOR HALL moved to 2131 S. Richey by the summer of 1960. Sondra Traxler shared with me she met her future husband there. TAYLOR HALL closed in 1968. Here’s a picture of the 1956-59 building that hosted the canteen (There may be pictures of other buildings that were used for the Taylor Hall Teen Canteen.): TBT...For Seniors who were teenagers in the 50s: Anybody remember TAYLOR HALL, a teen dance hall in Pasadena, TX?
