TBT: So, back in 1980, I was a photojournalist with the US Coast Guard and spent three weeks covering the Cuban Boatlift (Mariel, Cuba to Key West, Florida). I took these two photos. One shows a boat arriving at the Key West docks packed with refugee family members....and criminals. Fidel Castro released the convicts from his prisons and allowed them to leave Cuba on the refugee boats. Sad...and scary for the families that were just trying to get their loved ones back. The other shot is of a refugee who suffered a heart attack during all the excitement on the docks. She was in an ambulance a minute later and off to a local hospital. It was a confusing, yet powerful moment in history and I was proud to participate.
