#TBT THE QUEEN OF PARANG Repost via @star947 Her distinctive voice heralds the coming of Christmas in Trinidad and Tobago, 23 years after she passed away after being bed ridden for a year with a stroke, dying like a pauper. The Queen of Parang, Daisy Voisin was the the youngest of six children, born and raised in Erin South Trinidad. She belonged to a musical family that made and played their own instruments, the cuatro, mandolin and violin. Her singing talent was discovered in primary school and she first came to the fire when she won an Indian Cultural Competition by singing a Hindi song. Daisy was a school monitor ( teacher) until she became a single parent and took up nursing where she combined her love for singing by performing for patients and staff at the San Fernando General Hospital. She created the La Divina Pastora Parang Group and composed many popular Parang songs such as “Sereno Sereno”, “Alegria Alegria”, El Nacimiento de le Verdad”, self titled “Daisy Voisin” among others. Together they drew large crowds with her rich voice, up-beat rhythm and Daisy’s trademark “Aiyee!” throughout the Caribbean, Margarita, Venezuela and North America whenever they performed. In 1988 Daisy was honoured with the Humming Bird Silver Medal . Today , while her voice rings out throughout the nation, Daisy stands strong in her native Siparia, where a bronze life size statue of her was unveiled at the transport hub on High Street. #Caribbean #Music #Thesocalyst #Trinidad #Tobago #Parang
