TBT The R.L. Johnson Family – MERCHANTS OF BEDFORD My maternal grandfather was Robert Lee Johnson. He was born and raised on the historic pioneer Johnson Farm near the Peaks of Otter along with his well-known physician brother. This is a rare group photograph of part of the family. There were actually at least 19 children in this family. R.L. Johnson and his children made a significant impact on the economy and culture of Bedford during much of the 20th century. Family members operated Johnson’s Department Store, Johnson’s Super Market, Johnson Hardware, Johnson’s Furniture and several other retail enterprises. One of the children established the well-known Johnson’s Orchards which is a must see gem that thrives to this day. R.L. Johnson was also involved in banking and a variety of agricultural activities such as canning tomatoes. I was very much in awe of my grandpa as a little child. All of his children have passed away except one.
