TBT: The moment in 1965 when I set the high school state record in the mile run, which pretty much made it possible for me to go to UNC, Chapel Hill. My 1st application to UNC was rejected. I was accepted to Maryland and I was headed there in the fall of 1965. I took the SATs again and the UNC track coach intervened on my behalf, making it possible for me to go to UNC. I was going to write the Maryland track coach a letter to tell him when the phone rang one day. He was in Durham and I had to break the news to him over the phone. He came to the house. That was awkward. The other picture is at the ACC indoor championship meet in the Woolen Gym, (c) 1967 (wooden track moved from the Tin Can to Woolen Gym for the meet), where Im working my way through college. The other runner is from Maryland. I was always motivated to run well against those guys. I am grateful for the opportunity to go to UNC, where the sky is always Carolina Blue.
