#TBT Throwback Thursday! Here is an unusual photo from our exploratory trip to Kenya in 2012. Crayon puppets, and especially puppets with no arms, are excellent tools for teaching beginner puppeteers basic skills, without the distraction of too many moving parts. Additionally, the specific shape of the head, forces the puppeteer to pay special attention to proper jaw movement; a skill that must become second nature and takes a lot of practice. Together, a set of crayon puppets were being used in a simple sketch about race equality - something that was very important during the lead up to the elections in Kenya in 2013, where tribalism was a growing concern. Unfortunately, the white crayon puppet was more susceptible to dirt, so we had to have him hand washed and dried.
