#TBT What was Volunteers of America doing in 1955? Our Cleveland, OH office began a salvage program ushering in the numerous thrift stores a number of our offices now operate. The salvage program measured its profits in the number of days of work given to men who would otherwise have been unemployed as well as in how many poor families have been able to obtain clothing, furniture and household effects that they couldn’t afford to buy at regular stores. The salvage program also allowed the men it employed to learn various trades since donated materials were often times refurbished and repaired. In the stores, shoes sold for fifty cents to $1, kitchen tables and chairs for $2 or $3 and you could even buy a refrigerator for $7!
