TCM Monday: okay, youve got the Lon Chaney 1925 silent classic Phantom of the Opera at 6 am eastern and the Marx Brothers 1935 A Night At The Opera at 10 am--not to mention five Brigitte Bardot movies commencing at 8 pm--but my dark horse pick of the day would be the Damon Runyon produced The Big Street (1942), airing at 4:15 in the afternoon. Based on one of Runyons own works, the story centers around a timid waiter (Henry Fonda) who gets his chance to demonstrate his unflagging devotion to a cold, self-centered nightclub singer (Lucille Ball) when shes injured--by pushing her from NYC to Florida in a wheelchair! That may SOUND like a great set-up for a screwball comedy, but its anything but. The two actors play effectively against type, especially the usually lovable Lucy, whose final scene is unforgettable.
