TEACHERS & SENCOS Only those who know me personally know that what I am about to tell is the gospel truth :-( Every day brings more heartache and disappointment, and if the child is not a natural reader, then the worst readers of all, are those belonging to the experts ie. teachers :-( Yet again today, another P2 teacher reached out for my help with her son. The school had started Toe by Toe when her son was 7 yo, which should then take 2 years to complete! No! They did it for a couple of months and the SENCO gave up. Then they emphasised the silent e which is a very small percentage of the English language, plus they taught the child to end a syllable on a vowel - wtf?! Finally at 9 yo the child is totally confused and behind with his reading :-( As many of you know, I love Keda Cowling, who wrote Toe by Toe, and saved my sons life but .... I am not convinced by the Stareway to Spelling (spelt correctly) as it is just about spelling the first 300 common words with no correlation between them. Going back to basics and allowing common sense to prevail, I recommend the John Smith spelling books and even his quiz books have the same lists. This P2 teacher asked me to prepare a manual but Keda has done most of the work for me and I have shared some of my own research in the files section. Although in her 80s now, she did not have the scientific research to know why / how her methods work. It takes the electrical impulses to cross 3 synapses in order to reach the long term memory. So get it right 3 times in a row and it should be there long term. I know this is too long and should be in files but so few are reading that section :-( Would everyone on this site please direct every single teacher and SENCO you know to this page, as the teacher today, told me its getting even worse for the kids :-( Ive explained to her why, with the stupid constipated letters that END words. I am old and we were taught that each letter to START a word had a tiny u sound after it - although that will change if there is a different vowel :-) AND BTW THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DYSLEXIA - BRAIN SCANS SHOW THAT READING AND INTELLIGENCE ARE NOT LINKED IN THE BRAIN!! Please God, let common sense eventually reach Stranmillis and those that run the PGCE course, so that the teachers they train, can stop destroying classrooms full of kids and their ability to read :-( Come into the real world you lot and stop following modern ideas like sheep!! Question everything, why? why? why? and when the answer doesnt make sense or they try to baffle you with pseudo-scientific words, ask for plain English :-( BTW Primary School teachers usually fall out with me when I tell them where they are going wrong but if they would just try out my methods and use their common sense they would see wonderful results. I hate stupidity and am just so terribly sad and frustrated tonight :-( I really wish all teachers would feel as passionately about reading as I do :-(
