TEACHING FOR TRANSFORMATION Johan Potgieter 2014-12-02 Pr 4:25-27 “Let your eyes look directly ahead, and let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. Watch the path of your feet, and all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil.” I have been in a few African countries preaching the Word of God and driving on those ‘roads’ are a nightmare. Uganda was the worst. I actually took photographs of the holes there and I am not kidding when I say that some of them are so big, half of your vehicle will fit into them! When you drive there, you focus your attention about 100 meters ahead, as WELL AS right in front of you. This allows you to watch for major obstacles such as deceased cars, goats, and even fallen trees. However, no matter HOW careful and watchful you are, you STILL hit some of those smaller, deep, horrible holes from time to time. The different types of roads dictate how far into the rest of that road you can see. The smoother the road, the farther down it you can look. A rough road demands that you focus most of your attention immediately in front of the vehicle. To be a good driver, you actually have to train yourself to be aware of both the near and the distant, at the SAME time. So too, in our lives, we are on a road whose surface changes with the circumstances around us. Some days go along smoothly - the road is wide, flat, and clear. You are able to focus on both your earthly responsibilities as well as your time with the Lord. Other days again are filled with those horrible potholes of rough relationships, difficulties at the office, financial pressures and overwhelming temptations. You swerve around trying to avoid them, but still hit some; but keeping your focus ONLY on the immediate potholes causes you to lose your eternal perspective. REFLECTION We can take encouragement and instruction from the writer of Proverbs in chapter 4:25-27. On those days filled with potholes, it is all the more necessary to start with an eternal perspective, focusing on the Love, Grace and Mercy of our Almighty God. Heavenly Father, we were never promised a ‘smooth ride’ down here on the earth. Jesus even said that we will face troubles and storms in this life. But for this I am grateful Father, that You have already made provision by Your grace to see us through when we stumble and fall into life’s potholes. Thank You for always being there to guide us. In Jesus name. Amen Golden Nugget for the day: “When your eyes are focused on God, you always see things down here in greater perspective.” (Johan Potgieter)
