PABJers in Boston! Heres a list of what chapter members are doing during the convention. Manny Smith, once again will be producing on the technical end, a number of programs behind the scenes during the convention. Deirdre Childress Hopkins is providing direction for convention content as convention programming chair. Dawn Roberts, is representing as NABJ Associates Representative. Velvet McNeil, for the fifth consecutive year, is chair of the Visual Task Force Photo Auction. Shes responsible for organizing the auction, which includes a reception. Rod Hicks, is the deputy convention chair and also planning the Friday afternoon plenary on Government and the Media. It looks at recent government actions that infringe on a truly free press, such as secretly obtaining telephone records from The Associated Press and restricting photojournalists access to many presidential events and distributing its White House photographs instead. New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet is among the panelists. Denise James again is involved with leading the TV component of Student Projects. Cherri Gregg and Sarah Glover serve on the the NABJ Constitutional Commission. The commission recommends that full members vote to significantly update the organization’s primary governing document – to one that would better position NABJ and its members to succeed and serve others in the future. If adopted, the proposed constitution would retain the association’s mission and values and, with 3,100 members, preserve it as the largest organization for journalists of color. It would, however, among other things, provide for new membership opportunities and better continuity of leadership. Johann Calhoun, will be speaking on two panels: The Rising to the Call of Leadership Wednesday and The Black Press: Impact of an Increased Digital Presence Thursday. If you are doing anything special for NABJ in Boston i.e. working behind the scenes or speaking on a panel, tell us. We would like to support all things Philly.
