TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, as a franchise, has undergone several HITCHHIKERS GUIDE-like reinventions to keep it fresh, trying new things that kept it going well past the lifespan a spoofy property arguably should have...and yet, for all its action and mo-cap, the changes made for this cinematic reboot really do nothing for it. Most backlash is well-earned, as its continually obvious how uninspired it is, how changes did not serve the story, and basically how it doesnt make a great case for its own existence...but...there is a certain charm here that makes it somewhat bearable. Theres some interesting takes on the material, some genuine laughs, and despite the divisive redesign of the turtles, the brotherly heart of the characters is there, and I suppose that counts for something. It will wow kids and win out on nostalgia, and I guess thats okay, especially when I know for a fact it could have been much worse (So theyre aliens?). Theres always room for improvement, since were definitely getting a sequel; but if all else fails, you can always pick the version of TMNT that works best for you, as there are plenty to choose from.
