TELEVISION WHITE SPACE PROJECT AT ST MARYS SECONDARY SCHOOL by George Mpyaila,TVWS Project Coordinator,St Marys. The Television White Space(TVWS)internet is now working at St Marys Secondary School.TVWS is a project initiated by Dr Chomora Mikeka of Physics Department of Chancellor College in conjuction with Malawi Communications and Regulatory Environment(MACRA) and Marconi Lab of Italy. To begin with the term white space simply means an identified gap in the Universal High Frequency(UHF) band or an idle TV frequency or a frequency which is not used all the time.Through the findings of Jim Carson,it was proved that these frequencies can be use to provide internet connectivity at lower cost more especially the rural areas. This is one way of maximizing the use of spectrum which is a natural resource. As a pilot phase 5 centers were identified in the Eastern region thus St Marys Secondary School,Primiti Hospital,Geological Survey,Chancellor College Clinic and Air-wing.The project will support e-health, e-education among others and the existing gap in internet connectivity between urban and rural Malawi will be narrowed down eventually. CURRENT STATUS OF THE PROJECT It has been rolled out in all the five centers. The internet is indeed powerful with a high download speed.Having reached this mark it is worthwhile to proudly utter that Malawi is the first country in Africa to deploy this project and one of the few in the world and St Marys Secondary School as the the first in Africa and one the few in the world.
