TELLY BURROWS: those of us NOT devotees of the voice? alk amongst yourselves; for the rest of us: sisaundra. there are two (at least) categories of OMG: the mahalia/oliveros/lamonte tributery vs the patti labelle look. the open your mouth and the yoni-verse pours forth and the amazing but somehow secular the ninety-eight pound weakling lifts the car off the baby event. sisaundra is the latter. this is a mans world is a supremely unlikely candidate for super-song (especially with me as the nominator) but with pavarotti and james himself as the benchmark, there it is. stellar. and then there is the fall. never a giant fan of x-files (seemed just a vehicle for duchovnys charisma (the only thing i have liked him in is the rapture, michael tolkins amazing literal treatment of the titular belief) i had never had gillian anderson on my lez-dar--or any other like-meter but she is more gnarly and great than i ever would have imagined--what is it with cop show? the only genre where women in charge makes sense?--and archie panjabi as virtually the same character as on the good wife (here a motorcycle-riding pathologist rather than an investigator for a law firm) but with an and billing? netflix. LOVE. but although in the patti rather than the mahalia mode, sisaundra RULES. and it is hilarious that she and biff are both on blakes team. the country-boy (with all the tropes of parody intact) with the two most kick-ass black singers? priceless.
