TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, STEWARDSHIP. 1 CORINTHIANS 6:13-20. In an effort to bring the church at Corinth into a right relationship with God. Paul emphasizes the believer’s stewardship over his or her body. He says in this passage that the body is not self-governing or self-sustaining, but belongs to the Lord and is a member of Christ. In v. 19, Paul declares that the believer’s body is a temple, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit lives in the believer’s body, the believer cannot claim ownership of his or her body. In v. 20, Paul gives another reason the believer should not think of the body as his or her own: “You were bought at a price.” God purchased the believer’s body and spirit with the precious shed blood of Jesus Christ. Let us be diligent to remember that our bodies belong to the Lord---purchased by His Son and inhabited by His Spirit.
