TEN REASONS JAMES LOVELOCK IS EXTRAORDINARY: 1. He was the man behind the Gaia Theory, the belief that the Earth is a living organism. 2. He came from a poor family but that did not stop him from earning a Ph.D. Now he has eight honorary degrees to boot. 3. He invented the palladium transmodulator, a tracer method for mass transport measurements in the atmosphere and oceans, argon detector, and the electron capture detector that enabled scientists to measure the amount of chlorofluorocarbon in the environment. 4. He worked for NASA and was a fellow at prestigious schools. 5. He wrote five books and more than 200 scientific papers. 6. He applied for more than 40 patents and claims to be the inventor of the microwave oven. 7. He received three NASA Certificates of Recognition for: Gas Chromatograph Interface System and Method; Vapor Phase Detectors; Combined Carrier Gas Separator and Generator for Gas Chromatographic Systems. 8. He once served as the president of the Marine Biological Association (MBA). 9. He was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1990. 10. He has received the Rosenstiel Award in Oceanographic Science, the Amsterdam Prize for the Environment by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Geographical Society Discovery Lifetime award, and the Wollaston Medal among many other recognitions.
