TEN THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO AT THE BOX 1. Cherry pick your workouts There are people out there who might prefer to only attend the WODs that he/she likes or is really good at. eg. Someone who loves power moves and throwing heavy tin around, will make an effort to show up when the WOD consists of these movements to boss it. But, if running or burpees was involved, said person will suddenly go AWOL. It’s never a coincidence. A Cherry Picker will avoid any WOD that looks too hard, too heavy, too long, or too difficult. Picking only those that suits them best. I’ve seen boxes pick up on this a lot recently, it usually results in them creating a secret WOD for the next day to catch everyone out. Just don’t be a dousche – Go to the workouts you’ve scheduled regardless of what they are, or it will bite you in the ass. 2. Say ‘I can’t do it’ How do you know, if you haven’t even tried? We need to change the way we think in order to change the way we perform. We can only try our bests and give it all we’ve got. Don’t be afraid to fail, or fall on your ass, because you can do anything you put your mind to. 3. Give up Your head will give up much quicker than your body will, but your body won’t go where your mind doesn’t push it -You need to embrace the burn and visit the dark place. Your workout is such a small part of your day, and you CAN get through it without dying. You, and everyone around you is feeling the same pain, you’re not alone. No matter how slow you go, you’ve just got to keep moving. 4. Be a bad sport Crossfit and community go hand in hand, if you’re a bad sport- you might as well take a big fat steaming dump on everything Crossfit stands for. 5. Ignore your coaches advice Do this if you want to get injured or if you don’t want to improve. Coach knows best, don’t let your ego get in the way of this. 6. Give anything less than 110% effort No matter how much you wish you were better, or faster or fitter- You need to live in the moment. You can only try your absolute best, whatever that looks like. You’re the only one who can control how hard you push yourself, and all Crossfit demands from us is effort. It wants us to give it everything we have, until we are in tune with our bodies. 7. Cheat I’ve written about cheating before, and I still can’t figure out why you would cheat at your fitness. What’s the point?! You can’t cheat your body into believing you did more than you did! It’s pointless! If you don’t finish a WOD, don’t lie about it. You tried your best to get it done and that’s all that matters. 8. Let the clock dominate your form Before a workout, coaches tend to emphasize proper exercise execution, technique and form required throughout the WOD— but once we’re racing a clock, standards inevitably slip to gain speed. We need to focus on what we have the power to control and change, which is the weights we’re using, the accuracy of our movements, the level exertion – anything else other than time. 9. Leave out equipment Only do this, if you like being publicly shamed on Facebook and made to do burpees in exchange for likes. 10. Sweat all over the floor and not wipe it up This is just plain nasty! Those poor fools in the class after yours will have to bear crawl and burpee in your gross pools of sweat. It takes two seconds, grab a paper towel and be considerate of others.
