TERRIBLE TRAGEDY - I had finished watching TV around 2:00 AM and was just beginning to fall asleep, when I heard a woman scream out in the parking lot -Help us! Help us! I looked out my bedroom window and saw saw no one, but the window was open and I had an instant blast of HOT air coming in from outside. Not understanding what was happening I went out on my balcony - and went into absolute shock at the horror I was seeing. The entire 4th floor of the condo building NEXT DOOR was fully engulfed in flames. I ran inside and called 911 and found out that no one had even called them yet. I couldnt believe how fast this fire spread - before the fire department even arrived (10-15 minutes later, I might add - SO ridiculous), the windows had popped and flames poured out. When they started coming out of the roof next door, and I ran into the hallway and pulled the fire alarm, and then ran through the building pounding on every door until everyone answered. When I told them the next building was on fire, everyone scrambled to get out. Our building is separated by only a narrow driveway from theirs - clearly we were in imminent danger as well. Soon outside it was like world had come to an end - 2 giant ladder fire trucks, 4 other support vehicles, 4 ambulances, 6 police cars - even a city bus to hold all of us while the firemen fought the flames. The whole street was like one big set of flashing lights. I was just allowed back into my buildilng now at 6:00 AM, with a bit of smoke everywhere in the hallways, but no damage thank the Lord. Next door was not so lucky - unknown if any people were hurt but several missing and presumed dead pets, and the entire third and floors totally destroyed, with water damage apparently in most of the rest of the building. 60-80 people just lost their homes. It was a very terrifying night as we watched the Surrey Fire Department - nearly 30 firemen - fight the fire next door and work hard to save my building too. While I was pretty unimpressed with how long it took them to get set up and get started, Im so thankful to them all - they were absolute knights in shining armor tonight.
