TESTIMONIAL OF THE DAY: Terry Bozzio - (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, U.K., Jeff Beck, The Brecker Brothers) In this video, Terry Bozzio talks about Vics Drum Shop and his long-standing relationship with Vic. It was shot during Vics Grand Opening on October 29, 2011. Known for his groundbreaking work, Terry Bozzio is one of the most innovative drummers in history. • He was ahead of his time when he began doing double bass fills between his hands and feet in the 1970s and is instrumental in influencing countless drummers to adapt this approach today. • He is also one of the first drummers to come up with the idea of stacking multiple cymbals together to create a gated white noise type of sound, influencing drummers like Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini, Dave Weckl, and Mike Terrana to do the same. • With Missing Persons 1984 release, Rhyme & Reason, he embarked in a new direction by incorporating a radical electronic kit featuring beaterless bass drum pedals without employing any bass drums. Terry created this kit before the advent of MIDI technology, making triggering multiple sound sources even more difficult. He ended up being awarded three patents by the time he was done constructing the finished kit and invested tens of thousands of dollars. • He single handily made the word and concept of the ostinato commonplace among drummers today. • Terrys use of multiple pedals has inspired players like Mike Mangini, Stanton Moore, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, and Grant Collins to follow his lead. • Hes also pushed convention further by eliminating his ride cymbal (since 1981) and later adding a gong as a ride source. Rightfully so, Terry Bozzio was voted one of The 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine earlier this year.
