TESTIMONY FOR WOMEN Two weeks ago, I had surgery. Doctors removed a 12 pound uterine fibroid tumor. I had this tumor for about 7 years. Living with it. Adjusting to it. Having it minimize my quality of life. Although I get routine yearly exams, it was already large when it was first discovered. Being overweight hid it. In the last few years, I became more physically fit, but the tumor remained and became more prominent. For over 5 years, I looked as though I was pregnant. I caused embarrassment to many people who tried to congratulate me. LOL (I won’t tag you) 12 pounds is like carrying twins for over 5 years. It affects your bodily functions. As I am in my 2nd week of recovery, I laugh at the doctor’s recommendation for six weeks. (I tried to schedule off a full two weeks, but for those of you who saw me out last weekend, then you know I was unsuccessful. Thank GOD for the snow forcing me to be still and canceling events that “I must attend”.) Part of the reason I delayed the surgery is because I, as a single mother and sole business owner, could not drop out of circulation for six weeks. Another reason is I did not want the recommended surgery. It took me a long time to commit to surgery. When I finally decided to have the surgery the first of this year, in December I learned that my original doctor left her practice. Thankfully, she had already recommended a consultation with another doctor. He also saw no other alternative. :-( This 12 pound tumor extended from my pelvis to my breast bone. My original doctor said she would be required to cut me the entire length to remove it. Thank GOD that the new doctors made a smaller incision and stated they just “man-handled it out”. THANK GOD that although this 12 pound mass had invaded my body, there was no sign of cancer in it. MORAL OF THE STORY: Please pay attention to your body. Seek medical attention when you notice changes. Seek medical advice and alternative procedures, second opinions etc early. Do not live accepting substandard health which really could lead to worse conditions and which affects your ability to fully enjoy life. 40% of all women have fibroid tumors. African American women are 3 times more likely to obtain them than Caucasian women and get larger sizes. Hispanic women are the second highest tier of women who develop uterine fibroids.
