TETANUS VACCINATIONS- The team here at Rainbow want to remind all our clients to keep up to date with the their tetanus vaccinations!!! Tetanus is a bacterial disease that can affect most animals. Horses can be particularly susceptible because of the environments they are in and their tendency to incur injuries. It is caused by a bacterium called Clostridium Tetanii. It can enter the body through wounds, particularly puncture wounds. Tetanus toxin attacks nerves controlling the muscles of the body. The symptoms would be severe stiffness and spasms, the horse will have difficulty moving and eating and any stimulus such as loud noises, light or even touch can exacerbate the signs. The disease is fatal in up to 50% of horses that are affected. If diagnosed early enough treatment can be aimed at destroying the bacteria so no more toxin can be produced. If your horse has not been vaccinated against tetanus then wounds should be cleaned as soon as they occur and and a vet should be contacted straight away for advice. This is easily preventable by vaccinating your horse or pony. So contact the hospital today if you know your horse or pony is not vaccinated against tetanus or is in need of their booster. For the sake of £25 a year keep your pony safe!
