TEXTY BREAD Jan.3, 2014 Before the Epiphany The Holy Name of Jesus John 1:29-34 The Lamb of God .., Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world... A man is coming who is ahead of me because he existed before me... he is the one who baptize with the holy Spirit. Now I have seen and testified that he is the he is The Son of God. AMEN! ... The title John bestows on Jesus calls to mind three things. First, the suffering servant who bears our sins and is led like a lamb to the slaughter; The fourth Servant Song combine the image of the lamb with that of the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 52:13-53:12); its theme is redemptive suffering leading to final glorification. Second, the death of jesus which the early Christians compare to that of the Passover lamb (John 19:14; 1 Peter 1:19; 1 Cor. 5:7). The blood of the Passover lamb is sprinkled over the door spots of the Hebrews houses to save those within from the wrath of Gods avenging angel (Exodus 12:1-14). The slaughtered lamb also evokes images of the peoples liberation from bondage: the Lamb of God who takes the sin of the world (v 29). Third, the victorious apocalyptic lamb who will destroy evil in the world (Revelation 5-7; 1 John 3:5-8). ...Jesus mission involves suffering and death. He is an agent of GOD; his life and death result in liberation. He takes away the sins of the world by letting the evils of sin hurt him. He ends the cycle of violence and hatred by bearing all the consequences of sin. He conquers death by dying. He stops the cycle of evil not by opposing it but by letting himself be a victim... ...Who is Jesus to us personally in our own life and experience? REFLECTION: ...We suffer from the sins of others as well as our own. Anger, dishonesty, injustice, violence and betrayal can all drag us down. How will we help end the cycle of evil? PRAYER: ...Lord Jesus Christ, fill us with the power of your Holy Spirit and let us grow in the knowledge of your love and truth. Let your Spirit be aflame in our hearts that we may know and love you more fervently and strive to do your will in all things...AMEN.
